Republic Day

On every other 'day', for instance on a new year, 'Valentine's day', 'Friendship day', 'Boss' day' etc etc there will be flashing messages on cell phones, happy this day, happy that day and some ppol who are freakin jobless come up with some snazzy slogans (which by default are crappy). However on the 26th of January, nothing of that sort happened. I got only one msg on my cell phone (the dude who sent this must be a real patriot ). Sometimes I question why this distinction ? Dont the Indian greeting card companies see a 'booming business opportunity' in celebrating Republic day and the like. Why dont people distribute cards ? why dont people get together and have a party ? Arent we supposed to have fun for becoming a republic nation? arent we supposed to have fun on a day when the constitution was framed ? All that matters for us is that 'one more holiday' and that too for us working folks 'a holiday on a monday, lets chilll'. May be in the defence world, parties are hosted and there is that spirit of patriotism but what about the rest of us? I was prompted to write this after seeing a commercial on doordarshan in which a one legged man, stands on his crutches in attention when he hears the national anthem.
As a school going kid, republic day and independence days were such happy occasions for us. I would polish my shoes, wash and press my white clothes, go for a hair cut and on the day would be so happy to participate in the parade, compete in the lectures and what not. Now that spirit is gone, its all diminished. Republic day is just any other holiday.
